Welcome to Sun Prairie Cemetery
On July 29, 1850 a group of Sun Prairie settlers met for "the purpose of organizing a Cemetery Association and procuring suitable grounds for a burial ground". This was two years after Wisconsin became a state and eighteen years before the Village of Sun Prairie was formerly chartered.
The minutes of the first meeting did not record all the names of people attending the meeting, but they did record the following nine men elected as trustees of the Sun Prairie Cemetery Association: Timothy Cory, Rev. Sirus Smith, William H Angell, Rev. Moses Rowley, William Eldridge, Charels S Peaslee, Benjamin Knight, John Meyers and Charles H Bird. Silas Smith was elected the first Prsident of the Association and William H Angell was elected Secretary. Angell would serve as Secretary for fifty-five years.
In October of 1850, the trustees met and approved a resolution to accept the offer from Josiah L Hale of the City of New York, for three acres of land. Later, more land was puchased from Frank W Kendell and a small strip of land was donated by the Volunteer Fireman.
Today the Cemetery has 4.2 acres. The trustees agreed to sell the first lot on May 10, 1851.
Established in 1850
The Sun Prairie Cemetery Association has operated the cemetery since 1850 and is independent from the City of Sun Prairie.
The City of Sun Prairie has provided an operating grant since 2002.
